About this course
This Foundation Course in Nonviolent Communication consists of 8 sessions of 3 hours. No prior knowledge or experience is required to participate.
The training offers an in-depth introduction to the core principles and practices of Nonviolent Communication, including:
- transforming judgments into connection with underlying needs
- distinguishing observations from interpretations
- recognizing feelings and distinguishing them from thoughts
- becoming aware of the needs that underlie behavior
- understanding the difference between a request and a demand
- empathic listening — even in difficult situations
- speaking honestly in a way that fosters connection
- using self-empathy as a basis for resilience and presence
- expressing appreciation in a way that nourishes
- supporting dialogue with care for everyone involved
The method was developed by Marshall Rosenberg and is applied worldwide in therapy, mediation, education, healthcare, teams and families, among other fields.
Throughout the training, participants build a solid foundation in recognizing needs as universal human drivers, and in using language that supports cooperation, understanding and connection.
Format
The training takes place in a small group (maximum 12 participants), with space for personal input and reflection. Sessions include live demonstrations, short theoretical introductions, practical exercises in pairs and small groups, and exchange within the whole group. The guidance is responsive to the practical experiences of the participants.
Between sessions, participants receive reading material and exercises, and are invited to practice with fellow participants. The average time investment outside the sessions is about one hour per session — for example reading or practicing with a buddy.
